Cork Flooring

Cork flooring is regarded as an environmentally-friendly and sustainable product. Cork flooring was once considered old fashioned, now it's making a comeback and for good reason. Cork Tiles are quiet, warm, resilient, and are a natural insulation to provide coolness in summer and warm in winter.

Because of its sponge like density Cork tiles provide a flooring option that allows for bounce and not smash when items are dropped on it. Dents generally bounce back and the cork tiles don't normally mark.

Cork is used for flooring, wine bottles and insulation is a natural product harvested for commercial use from the bark of the Cork Oak tree, The regeneration of natural forests is continuous as the harvesting of cork does not require the removal of trees, just the bark. The bark re-grows completely within around nine years when the cork is harvested again.

Cork flooring has a high level of naturally occurring suberin, which means it is highly water resistant, as the main function of suberin is to prevent water from penetrating the ‘tissue’. Its elasticity combined with its near water impermeability makes cork suitable as a material for bottle stoppers, insulation and as a Cork flooring product.

Cork flooring is a hard wearing floor for life and is considered to be a fantastic sustainable floor covering, that is good for our environment and it RENEWABLE. It can be resurfaced and re-sanded bringing life back to the Cork flooring after years of wear.

Cork flooring provides a fuss-free alternative to timber floors and is perfect for use in high traffic and wet areas.

Our Products

NUFLOORS has been supplying and installing cork flooring products in and around Auckland since 1988 and has knowledge and experience in the installation of cork flooring. We have a proud history of providing an exceptional product and service to our customers and we offer a full supply and installation service to take the hassle out of your cork flooring experience. Cork flooring is a beautiful natural flooring product.

Do you have an existing cork flooring and want to give it a new lease on life?

Re-sanding existing cork flooring

Re-sanding a cork floor will strip away all polyurethane and cut the floor back to the natural cork. It provides an ‘as new’ result once the floor is surfaced with three heavy coats of polyurethane to a selected finish of either Matt, Satin or Gloss upon your request.

Re-sand should be considered when:

  • The cork flooring has not been maintained.
  • Fire or water damage has occurred to your cork flooring.
  • Individual tiles need to be removed or replaced.
  • The cork flooring is peeling or flaking.

Once the existing cork flooring has been rough sanded to remove all polyurethane coating, the floor is then buffed carefully to ensure as smooth a finish as possible. The cork flooring is then finished with a hi-speed buff and three heavy coats of polyurethane are applied to restore it to its original state.

Customers should note that as with the installation of a new cork floor, this is a dusty procedure and we suggest that you read our customer reference sheet prior to installation or re-sanding.

Resurfacing cork tiles

A quick and easy way to bring your cork flooring back to life is by a resurface. When your floor starts to appear dull and lacks lustre, it’s time to consider resurfacing.

We recommend that all cork tile floors be resurfaced at intervals of approximately 4-6 years to keep their shine and to keep the floor looking ‘as new’.

After the cork flooring is cleaned with our approved solvent, it is then sanded lightly to ensure the new coat of polyurethane adheres to the surface.

As not all polyurethanes are compatible with each other, care is taken to ensure the surface is correctly prepared. However, there may be some trial and error in the process depending on other household products that have been applied to areas of the floor, such as ironing sprays etc.

If your cork floor is flaking or peeling, expert advice should be sought before going ahead so please give us a call.

Any application of products to the floor may have a detrimental effect on the resurfacing process.  Unfortunatley in the event of this happening we can not predict exactly what type of chemical reaction may be seen as a result.

Staining and Colouring http://www.nufloors.co.nz/floor-sanding-service/staining-and-colouring http://www.nufloors.co.nz/floor-sanding-service/staining-and-colouring Staining Wooden Floors

Staining timber floors is one of the best ways to improve timber flooring that is tired and worn. Through wooden floor staining and floor blonding our floor sanders can assist you in enhancing the grain and adding colour effects by either darkening or lightening the wood. This gives it a rich, warm appearance that can dramatically enhance any room.

Our floor sanders are experts in high-quality wooden floor staining, with the ability to match most colours from light to very dark timbers. In wooden floor staining, rather than applying the colour as a tint (wood stain mixed with polyurethane), the stain is applied directly onto the timber floor boards, ensuring a higher quality and longer lasting finish. This means that if the surface of the floor is scratched, the colour remains intact as it has penetrated into the timber floorboards. There are many wood stains available, Our floor sander can bring some pre-stained samples to your house to do an onsite consultation.

Timber Floor Staining is the most effective way to create a dark rich colour, by actually penetrating the timber floorboards, not just the top finish. Direct staining a wooden floor requires a high level of experience and workmanship. When the wooden stain has dried, a clear finish is applied over the top. The staining materials are carefully chosen so that they do not impact the adhesive strength of the top coat.

Having stained timber flooring in your home creates character to your colour scheme in any property.

Blonding

Blonding is a Whiting process carried out when a water based finish is applied to the floorboards with a special white additive. Blonding gives the timber flooring a lighter and slightly milky appearance, while allowing the timber's natural beauty and character show through.

Whitewashing

Whitewashing floorboards has been used for centuries, both inside and outside. It gives rooms a lighter, brighter feel and can be used to achieve a traditional light decor. It is also a much easier alternative to bleaching, making new floorboards look as though they have been well scrubbed for decades. Originally, whitewash was made from lime and water, but these days whitewash is also made from a watered down paint or by applying a modified Oil. When whitewashing floorboards, the idea is to get the white colour into the grain of the wood so when the excess is wiped off the whitewash shows up the wood grain but does not cover the wood like normal paint. Whitewashing your floors is a time honoured way to lighten your wood floor and bring a touch of vintage charm to your home.

NUFLOORS

Blonding is the process where the polyurethane is tinted white and looks like diluted milk that has been poured over the floor. We can cater for all customer tastes as the polyurethane is only slightly tinted so requires several layers to achieve the desired shade of white.
Blonding a wood floor? - There are a number of methods by which a wooden floor is whitewashed or blonded, wooden flooring colours are a choice
How to blonde a wooden floor? - A white tint is added to the polyurethane, generally only 1 to 2% and is then applied to the timber floor in layers. The number of layers depends on how white you want the floor to look. The polyurethane isn't tinted any more than 1 to 2% as it becomes increasingly hard to apply the colour evenly without getting overlapping and streak marks.

How to whitewash a wooden floor?

Option 1. White paint is thinned down until the whitewash level that you like is achieved, the paint is then applied directly onto the timber flooring and a two pack non-yellowing water based polyurethane applied to the whitened timber floor.

Option 2. A Modified Oil in Brushed onto your floorboards left for a few minutes to let the stain penetrate the timber, the excess is wiped off, this system alows for the depth of the grain to show through. This is the whitewash effect that has become very popular on american oak timber flooring.

Any sheen can be achieved with white washing or blonding (ie. gloss, satin or matte).

Of all the choices in designing a new space, the choice of which type of wood stain and finish can be a huge one. Aside from the many choices of wooden flooring colours and the many fabulous sustainable alternatives to new hardwood floors, your colour choice is huge. Going light or dark with wood can create an entirely different vibe throughout your home, and determines what you're able to do with your space. For instance, you don't want dark walls with dark wood floors unless you are creating the untimate Bat Cave. And light wood with light colours may feel more cottage than you're wanting.

Whichever option you choose for timber floor staining, our friendly team of floor sanders will be happy to help. Our floor sanders can even stain up some samples and give advice about the best options available. Regardless of your future interior renovation plans, we will help you to try and achieve your desired effect
