Engineered Flooring

Despite the impression of the name suggesting imitation and construction rather than natural and hard wearing, Engineered Flooring is anything but. Made of a core of hardwood or plywood with a layer of hardwood affixed to the top surface, engineered flooring is more resistant to moisture and heat than solid hardwood flooring.

Engineered wood flooring is made up of two or more layers of wood in the form of a plank. It is the most common type of wood flooring used globally.

Engineered wood flooring arrives in set lengths and is pre-finished. It can ahve bevelled edges and is installed with glue. Engineered Flooring can therefore be installed more efficiently by your Nufloors engineered flooring installation specialist. It also suitable for underfloor and radiant heating systems.

The benefits of using engineered wood flooring

- More resistance to changes in weather and moisture levels than solid wood

- Can be adhered directly to dry concrete slabs (above or below grade)

- Can be stapled directly to a wood subfloor

- Has the resale value of 3/4” solid wood flooring for home value.

Engineered Flooring Specification

Engineered hardwood flooring  comes in a wide range of sizes from 3-7 inches wide and 3/8”-3/4” in thickness. There is also a wide range of hardwood species available.

The level orf thickness can be from 6 mm. This can be re-coated and be sanded and refinished once it gets worn. Once installed by Nufloors this floor will have an average lifespan of 40-100 years. Other brands or styles can have a thicker 2-3 mm thick wear layer that can be completely sanded and refinished new again if they ever needed to be. These thicker wear layer engineered floors are usually more expensive to purchase upfront but can last 40-100 or more years before having to be replaced.

Engineered wood flooring is manufactured in two ways.

- Sliced/Sawn cut from the log

Engineered hardwood flooring that has a Sliced/Sawn cut wear layer shows the truer natural look of the wood and finer graining. Sliced/Sawn cut engineered flooring also allows a thicker wear layer.

- Rotary cut,

Engineered veneer hardwood where the layer is peeled off the log using big lathes. This peeling method can show dramatic wilder graining.

Not all engineered flooring is alike!

Even on a budget we can assist you in finding a good quality engineered floor.

Your Nufloors flooring specialist will provide you with free advice on the best flooring choice for your home and areas of your home.
