The Knoll- Ameican Walnut Flooring

The Knoll- Ameican walnut flooring

The Knoll. Part one. - Now I wanted to write about this floor to half. The timber was sourced and supplied by Nufloors. We also laid the timber hardwood flooring as well. Now as will tell from the pictures that no polyurethane is on the floor and you might be wondering what sort of timber species it is. I will answer both those questions for you later.

First the process up to what you see in the pictures. Firstly a team member from Nufloors Floor Sanding Auckland goes in and prepares the concrete floor for installation team. He does this by concrete grinding the floor first. Then a water proof coating is applied to the concrete floor. This is for moisture resistance coming up through the concrete.

After the above mentioned is completed out team of layers come in to do their magic. They sort through each piece of timber to insure that the floor goes down right and stays there for ever. As this is a rustic timber this very important as you don't want to have knots and holes close together. Once completed it is then that the Nufloors Floor Sanding team comes in to do their part of the job.

This is why I have written this blog in two parts. - So Hugh our head floorsander me comes in preps the floor for the next part later and the kitchen. Now with any floor especially rustic the process is almost the same. So first of I need to cross cut the floor to make sure that it flat. We the make up a coloured two pack apoxy which is used to fill all the big knots and holes. Once dry the floor is given a straight cut to clean off most of the apoxy. We then trowel fill the whole floor.

Once the above is complete we let it dry of the we sand the kitchen area to a fine finish for the kitchen to be installed. The rest of the floor is left with the trowel filling on it to protect it from painting and dust. And it is all this that you see in the photos.
Now the timber. What's it call. It is American Walnut. About walnut? Check out the facts below.

Color/Appearance: Heartwood can range from a lighter pale brown to a dark chocolate brown with darker brown streaks. Color can sometimes have a grey, purple, or reddish cast. Sapwood is pale yellow-gray to nearly white. Figured grain patterns such as curl, crotch, and burl are also seen.
Grain/Texture: Grain is usually straight, but can be irregular. Has a medium texture and moderate natural luster.

While its primary native region is the Midwest and east-central United States, the black walnut was introduced into Europe in 1629. It is cultivated there and in North America as a forest tree for its high-quality wood. Black walnut is more resistant to frost than the English or Persian walnut, but thrives best in the warmer regions of fertile, lowland soils with high water tables. Black walnut is primarily a pioneer species similar to red and silver maple and black cherry.
Well that's mind blowing. Part two will be done when I get back from Bali to complete the sanding and coating process.
